The Office of Safe Environment is responsible for providing required training on the prevention of child sexual abuse. Safe Environment training equips participants to recognize predatory behaviors, understand and maintain appropriate boundaries, and how to report concerns, emphasizing the importance of reporting, while fostering a culture of awareness, knowledge, and vigilance for those entrusted to our care.
The Diocesan Child and Youth Protection policy requires completion of the initial Safe Environment training session (2 hours) upon assumption of duties, employment, or volunteer service for individuals 18 years of age and older who are required to attend the initial Safe Environment Training and undergo a criminal background check. Those individuals include:
All clergy;
All members of religious orders;
All parish and diocesan employees, including those who have no contact with children, young people, or vulnerable adults;
All adult volunteers whose ministry or role places them in regular contact with children, young people, or vulnerable adults;
All liturgical ministers, including Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, members of the Music Ministry (such as cantors, choir members, and instrumentalists), sacristans, adult altar servers, leaders of liturgical ministries, lectors/readers, commentators, greeters, ushers, and those involved in homebound ministry;
Any adult interested in learning more about child abuse prevention.
NOTE: The Initial Safe Environment training is completed one time only. After that, any future Safe Environment training sessions are re-certification sessions, regardless of how much time has passed since the initial training. |
