Most Rev. Douglas J. Lucia, Bishop of Syracuse, will ordain John Brusa III of Syracuse and Joseph Ryan of Binghamton into the priesthood at a Mass on Saturday, June 7 at 10 AM at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Downtown Syracuse. Bishop Lucia has announced Pastoral Assignments for Spring 2025

“Habemus papam” – “We have a pope!” I join Catholics throughout the world in welcoming Pope Leo XIV as the 267th Successor of St. Peter. Along with Bishop Robert J. Cunningham, our Bishop-emeritus, and the clergy and faithful of the Diocese of Syracuse, I assure the new Universal Pastor and Bishop of Rome of our best wishes and prayers as he assumes the role of Vicar of Christ on earth.

As tears sting my eyes, I join the Catholic Church throughout the world mourning the death of our beloved, Pope Francis, the 266th Successor of St. Peter whose true giftedness to the Church of the 21st century will only be seen as we grow in synodality. On May 9, 2024, His Holiness, Pope Francis declared an Ordinary Jubilee for 2025 with the Papal Bull "Spes non confundit" reminding the faithful that "the Pilgrimage is a fundamental element of every Jubilee event and that "in the coming year, pilgrims of hope will surely travel the ancient and more modem routes in order to experience the Jubilee to the full" (Spes non Coefundit 5). In this Bull, in addition to the Holy Doors and Jubilee Churches in Rome, our Holy Father indicated the importance of also making other places at the local level, spaces of welcome in which to generate hope (23 ).

The Diocese of Syracuse announces a plan to bring together Bishop Ludden and Bishop Grimes Jr./Sr. High School to form a new junior/senior high school. The unified entity will be located at the current Bishop Ludden High School campus at 815 Fay Road in Syracuse. It will be named Bishop Ludden/Grimes, honoring the legacy and contributions of both schools, which were named after the first and second Bishops of Syracuse, respectively.
