Decree on the Extinctive Union - Merger of the Parishes of Saint Joseph, Saint Paul, Saint Peter, and Saint Stephen, The King of Hungary, Oswego, New York

Syracuse, New York-- Most Reverend Douglas J. Lucia, Bishop of Syracuse, has announced his decision regarding the unification of the parishes of Oswego. In a letter mailed to parishioners, he explained that after seven months of study and consultation, he has affirmed the establishment of Christ the Good Shepherd Parish in Oswego with Rev. John Canorro as its pastor, effective May 31, 2020.

In May 2019, Pope Francis released his apostolic letter, Vos estis lux mundi (“You are the light of the world”) to address the issue of sexual abuse and bishop accountability in the global Catholic Church. Vos estis calls upon the metropolitan archbishops to undertake the responsibilities for receiving and assessing reports involving bishops that pertain to sexual abuse and related misconduct.

The Most Reverend Douglas J. Lucia, Bishop of Syracuse, has granted all the faithful of the Diocese of Syracuse a dispensation from the law of abstinence for the Fridays of Lent this year. This is being done to assist people who may have difficulties in shopping for food or other reasons which would make this practice difficult at this time.

Most Reverend Douglas J. Lucia issued new directives relating to the celebration of Mass.  The Revised Liturgical Response to the Coronavirus was shared with all pastors and staff among the seven counties of the Diocese of Syracuse and can be found on the diocesan website. As we continue to monitor the coronavirus, the directives may be modified.

The Diocese of Syracuse has been in consultation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is actively following the directive of the county public health departments to ensure that all diocesan parishes, schools, ministries, and charities are responding appropriately to the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Syracuse Roman Catholic Diocese will host IGNITE 2020 Catholic Men’s Conference, on Saturday, March 28, 2020, 8 a.m. to 5p.m., at the SRC Arena and Event Center, Syracuse. This day-long event will feature lunch, free parking, Mass, three nationally known speakers.

Most Reverend Douglas J. Lucia has announced that Rev. Paul Angelicchio will no longer be on administrative leave and will return to his position as pastor of St. John the Baptist Church and Transfiguration Church in Rome NY, effective Saturday, February 1, 2020. Father Angelicchio was placed on administrative leave in November 2019 after being named in a civil lawsuit detailing allegations of sexual abuse between 1980-1981. 

Father Paul Angelicchio, Pastor of St. John the Baptist Church and Transfiguration Church in Rome, NY was recently named in a civil lawsuit.  The lawsuit seeks monetary damages for alleged sexual abuse during a time between 1980-1981. The Diocese of Syracuse is also named in the lawsuit.

A Healing Service for Victim-Survivors of Clergy Sexual Abuse will be held on Thursday, November 14, 7pm at Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 1736 Burrstone Road, New Hartford.  The service was planned by two victim-survivors of clergy sexual abuse. Dan Paden and Matt FitzGibbons, both survivors of abuse in the Diocese of Syracuse, have taken the lead in offering an approach of forgiveness and healing to the current issue of abuse.

Syracuse, New York-- Most Reverend Douglas J. Lucia, Bishop of Syracuse, has announced his first set of pastoral appointments in a letter written to all clergy of the diocese. In the letter, he wrote:

Most Rev. Robert J. Cunningham, Bishop of Syracuse announced the appointment of new pastors/administrators and those retiring at the end of June, 2010.

Father Gaetano T. Baccaro: Administrator of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Minetto and Our Lady of the Rosary Mission in Hannibal, effective July 1, 2019.   Father Bacarro currently serves as pastor of St. Paul’s Church in Oswego and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. St. Paul’s is one of four Oswego parishes that will unite as Christ the Good Shepherd Parish on July 1. Father John Canorro will serve as pastor of the new parish.   

Pope Francis has appointed a new bishop for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse.  Bishop-elect Douglas John Lucia, 56, of the Diocese of Ogdensburg will become the 11th bishop of Syracuse, succeeding Bishop Robert J. Cunningham who has served the diocese since May 26, 2009.  Bishop-elect Lucia will be ordained and installed at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception located in downtown Syracuse at a date soon to be determined.

Most Rev. Robert J. Cunningham, Bishop of Syracuse has appointed Father John W. Canorro as Pastor of the newly merged parish of Christ the Good Shepherd in Oswego, New York effective July 1, 2019.  Father Canorro will leave his position as Pastor of St. Rose of Lima in North Syracuse where he has served as its pastor since July 2017.
